It is raining babies at my house!

I thought that would wake some people up. Actually it is raining baby projects at my house  this week. So far I have finished 2 baby afghans, several preemie caps and started on new baby dolls. I have even made some baby leg warmers for preemies. However, the main theme has been baby blankets.

Here are the blankets. I had 3 blankets that needed to be made before the end of the year all for boys. I liked this variation of the granny square blanket. It combines the best of the granny square and a ripple stitch blanket. I used this blanket pattern I found on Ravelry.

The last blanket was made for my grandson’s baby brother that is due in Jan. He picked out the colors and you see the results! But now I’m tired of doing blankets and ready to start on something new. Fall is in the air and children’s scarves are calling.

Abby Update: 8 Days Old

Abigail, Lydia, and Patrick are the type of precious gifts I think of when working on preemie clothes. Their growth and faith of their families are awesome.

Weight: 2 pounds, 9 ½ ounces
Feedings: 7 milliliters (about 1 ½ teaspoons) every 3 hours

Yesterday when Dan and I walked into the NICU our nurse informed us that Abigail has been hungry. Standard procedure in the NICU is that for the first seven days of life babies are only allowed to receive their MEN feedings (minimal enteral nutrition) which is only four milliliters every four hours. The point is to get things going in the digestive system without causing any problems. Well, Abby wasn’t happy with her MEN feedings. She was hungry! Our nurse asked if she could get her feedings bumped up a day early, but the doctors turned her down. That’s ok. Today Abby is getting more food at last. Now we can really start watching her gain weight.

Yesterday Abby was off of the bilirubin light. Her bilirubin had come down from 7 to…

Helping Our Schools

This is totally different from what you usually see here but it is part of what is happening in my world right now.  I am on two committees at my school. They are both important to me. One deals with our media center.  The other one deals with finding grants to help with the needs of the school.

The media committee is in charge of Reading Rocks, 2 book fairs and Battle of the books competition. Battle of the
Books is pretty neat because it encourages students to read and then they compete with other schools. Reading Rocks is a fund raising event that culminates in a 5K walk. All the money raised goes to the media centers plus you get a nice workout with other like minded people.

The Grant Committee is teaching me personally how much is really needed in the schools. We think that everything is provided by the state but it isn’t. So now I am on the hunt for grants to help in a variety of ways. I found the article

Help Your School: Go Get a Grant

It has great suggestions and I have started doing them. However, if anyone has any specific suggestions on where to look post me a comment and I promise I will look into it. Or use the article to help your local school. I know they will appreciate it.

If you are asked to help in some way at your child or grandchild’s school, consider doing it. Something as simple as sending a baggie of pennies to a book fund raiser like our Reading Rocks drive or helping teachers find grants they can apply for benefits your children. It isn’t to increase a teacher’s pay but to increase resources for your child’s education. Of course there are many ways to support the school through your local PTA.

My next post will be back to crochet I promise. I have some great things going on.

Crazy Week, Crazy Me

You ever have one of those weeks when you realize you didn’t do something important because you were doing so much? That is me today. I consider this blog and my followers important. You are what keep me looking for new ideas and new challenges. But I realized I had not been fair to you because I didn’t share some of what I had put in the shop. I had just presumed your curiosity would send you there. When i think about it, I don’t always go to links on the blogs I follow. Who has time? We do have other things to do. So I am going to share some of what I put in the store here.

I have some more things to put in the shop that I will share later this week. I am getting excited about fall and cooler weather.

Busy Week

Wow, what a busy week it has been. I opened my Etsy shop and made my first sale. preemie football set I decided to offer this set again in a variety of sizes and also change the cream to pink for girls. I will call them “Daddy’s Football Star”. I am making the preemie clothes in honor of a precious grandson of one of my co-workers. We have followed his growth this year and been so excited to see  him become quite a little man. Preemies can be a blessing and I think they deserve special clothes especially in the preemie ward. I want parents to smile when they look at their precious child.

I have also decided to donate a cap for every sale from my shop or auctions to C Wayne Collier Elementary’s “Cover Our Beavers” coat and hat drive.

I was also asked to cover some naked dolls in the classrooms. I admit I didn’t spend a lot of time and make them fancy. These are children who can be mighty rough on things and the teachers just wanted something to cover the dolls. The teachers were thrilled and I was happy to help. I still have to finish the one for my room but for now it will have to wait. I have about 10 projects ahead of it. IMG_0016 Plus I made a soft doll for a classroom that didn’t have any soft ones. The children need ones they can cuddle. IMG_0057

I couple of other things coming in the next few weeks and I’ll let you know as I get more information. In the meantime enjoy the beautiful weather and the people in your life.

Etsy Shop opened

i decided to go ahead and open an Etsy shop. My schedule this year will allow to crochet at least 2 hours a day.  I will be focusing on crochet items. I plan to have plenty of caps in all varieties along with preemie outfits since I love to make them. I also believe my husband will be making some more wooden crochet hooks. I wanted to share it with you. I hope to get about 10 items in the shop this week. I have been focusing on preemie caps and booties this week. I have had football on the brain. I wonder why and it has shown in what I have made. I will talk more about that in another post.

I also wanted to tell you the results from the poll about making a cap. I wanted to make a hamburger cap but I am glad I didn’t. No one voted for it. The minion cap won. I started on it and will probably have it done by the end of the week. However, I got an order for the Thomas the Train cap and will make it also. Right now I have 5 naked baby dolls that need clothes before our children get in class Tuesday. Plus a doll to finish and about 6 other items to crochet on my list! So let me get back to crocheting!  I’ll post pictures soon.
